Alcuin's Approach to Institutional Statement

At Alcuin School, our mission is to inspire students to reach their highest levels of personal and academic achievement, guiding them to become compassionate global citizens, and preparing them to embrace challenges with confidence and innovation while fostering a diverse and inclusive community. In times of national or global crises, we are often called upon to provide guidance, reassurance, and clarity for our students, families, and staff. However, we approach these moments with the understanding that only certain events require an institutional response. When we speak, it is carefully considered, rooted in our mission, and accompanied by actions reflecting our core values.

A Mission-Driven Response

When events occur—whether they are national, global, or local—they can impact our community in profound ways. As an educational institution, we believe that our primary role is to help our students navigate these events through a lens of intellectual engagement and emotional support. We strive to foster critical thinking, provide individualized learning experiences, and promote global awareness in everything we do, including our responses to external events.
In moments of significance, our communications will always reflect this mission:
    • Critical Thinking: We encourage our students at age-appropriate levels to think deeply about current events and to approach challenges with an open, inquisitive mindset.
    • Individualized Support: We recognize that everyone in our community processes events differently. We provide resources that allow students, staff, and families to engage with difficult topics in ways that align with their unique emotional and intellectual needs.
    • Global Awareness: We aim to foster a holistic understanding of global issues, promoting meaningful and respectful dialogue.
    • Inclusivity and Belonging: Our communications are crafted to respect the diversity of thought within our community, ensuring that all voices feel supported and heard.

When and Why We Issue Statements

Before deciding whether to issue a public statement in response to an external event, we ask ourselves several key questions:
  • Impact on Education: Does this event affect education, either directly or indirectly? Does it impact schools, academic freedoms, or our ability to serve our students?
  • Impact on the Alcuin Community: Is this event likely to directly affect the safety, well-being, or emotional health of our students, families, or staff? Is it something that deeply resonates with the values of inclusivity, safety, or well-being within our community?
  • Contribution to the Conversation: Can Alcuin offer a meaningful contribution to the broader conversation, either through education or concrete action?
  • Actionable Support: Are there tangible steps we can take to support our community, such as offering counseling, organizing forums, or providing opportunities for service?
If the answers to these questions align with our mission and values, we move forward with a thoughtful, mission-driven response.

A Collaborative Process

Our decision to issue a statement is never made in haste. It begins with a small team of senior leaders, including the Head of School, key administrators, Trustees, and faculty with expertise in relevant areas, coming together to assess the situation. We may also seek input from students, parents, or other community members, ensuring that we consider multiple perspectives.
Once we decide to move forward, the statement is crafted with care. Every message we issue must:
  • Acknowledge the event respectfully and thoughtfully.
  • Focus on the well-being and needs of the Alcuin community.
  • Highlight any specific actions the school is taking in response, such as providing emotional support or educational opportunities for discussion.
  • Tie back to our core values, emphasizing how our response reflects our mission of fostering globally aware, compassionate individuals.
  • Provide additional resources for those seeking more support or information.
We understand that in these moments, words alone are not enough. Any statement we make must be accompanied by concrete actions that help our community engage meaningfully with the situation.

Putting Our Values into Action

Our response to crises goes beyond issuing a statement. We are committed to taking action that aligns with our mission and values. This might include:
  • Student Support: Providing resources to help students process difficult emotions, creating safe spaces for reflection, or offering grief counseling.
  • Educational Engagement: Hosting forums or classroom discussions where students can engage in dialogue about the issues, guided by the principles of inquiry-based learning from both the Montessori and IB programs.
  • Community Service: Organizing service projects or advocacy efforts that allow students and families to take meaningful action in response to the event.
  • Parent Resources: Sharing guidance and resources to help parents talk with their children about difficult topics in a way that fosters understanding and empathy.

A Thoughtful Reflection of Who We Are

As we continue to grow as a school and as a community, we will review our communication practices annually, ensuring that they remain aligned with the needs of our community and the evolving world around us. Our goal is always to reflect the best of who we are, providing not just words but actions that support our students in becoming thoughtful, compassionate, and engaged citizens of the world.
