Sudborough loves to travel and has been a world traveler for as long as she can remember. She was once featured in a local English newspaper as a baby for traveling so many miles around the globe at such a young age.
Layarne Sudborough is the Early Childhood Permanent Sub and Materials Maker at Alcuin. She likes to think of herself as the behind-the-scenes backbone of the Early Childhood program, spending many of her days working in classrooms or helping teachers create materials for the little Montessori minds in the classroom.
Sudborough comes to Alcuin with a bachelor's degree in Ceramics and Psychology from the University of North Texas. She studied everything from African Dancing in Ghana, Phenomenology of Embodiment, Anthropology and Stress Reduction Through Movement. She loves sculpture, drawing, painting, jewelry-making, woodburning and learning new crafts and ideas from videos online. She loves collecting crystals and rocks as well as anything with a sloth on it.
She earned an AMI Assistants to Infancy diploma from the Montessori Institute of Texas (MINT) in 2006, but joined the Alcuin faculty in 2004. Sudborough has had many roles at Alcuin as a guide and assistant, and has substituted at every level in the classroom from toddler to middle school including Montessori Primary Care and After School Enrichment.
As the support staff extraordinaire, she has seen it all.
Her ultimate happy place though, is with a book in her hands reading to the children. Sudborough adores putting expression and emotions into the pages and bringing books to life with characters and mystique. She remembers how reading was a struggle for her as a small child and therefore bringing the love of books and storytelling has a very precious place in her heart. It is her life goal to write and illustrate her own children’s book.
Sudborough loves to travel and has been a world traveler for as long as she can remember. She was once featured in a local English newspaper as a baby for traveling so many miles around the globe at such a young age. She lived in twelve homes by the time she was 12 years old and has lived in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.
During her college years Sudborough worked abroad in England on a BUNAC visa for a time. Layarne travels most often to Greece with her husband and his family there during summers. She also visits her mother in Wales.
Her favorite spots on the globe are the Seychelles, Germany, Italy, France and Hawaii. It is her dream to travel to Costa Rica to visit a sloth sanctuary and bring a book and read to them.
