Lower Elementary
Students arriving in Lower Elementary begin discovering new concepts and skills while deepening their existing interests and exploring new ones.
Students at grades (or levels) 1, 2, and 3 are developmentally ready to begin absorbing information on an abstract level. They cultivate a deeper understanding of big-picture concepts by participating in lessons that push the boundaries of thinking and reasoning. Activities such as collaborating on research projects, creating timelines of human history, and using Montessori materials to present math problems that stretch across the classroom, encourage students to think broadly and creatively.
Guides and Teaching Assistants in the Lower Elementary classrooms utilize the three-period lesson. In this pedagogical format, new topics are covered so thoroughly that students display mastery of subjects and concepts. They are introduced to new subjects such as botany, zoology, and geometry, while gaining proficiency in sentence structure and storytelling.
