News from the Nest - April 21

The Alcuin Community will dance the Shipoopi and revel in the excitement of the Wells Fargo Wagon coming to town when Alcuin School performs Meredith Willson’s The Music Man Jr.! The musical tells the story of charismatic con man Harold Hill, who galvanizes a stodgy, entertainment-starved Iowa town at the turn of the 20th century. Intending to fleece River City’s citizens with a false scheme to organize a student band, Hill's plans hit a sour note when he falls for Marian, the town librarian. With book, music, and lyrics by Meredith Willson, and story by Meredith Willson and Franklin Lacey, The Music Man Jr. is based on Meredith Willson’s The Music Man, which won eight Tony Awards.

Alcuin Fine Arts will present the Broadway Junior production Meredith Willson’s The Music Man Jr. on April 26 at 6:00 p.m., and April 27 at 2:00 p.m. in the Wyly Performing Arts Center at Alcuin School.

    Alcuin ArtsFest Recap

The Fine Arts team extends our deepest thanks to the entire Alcuin community for your support of our Alcuin ArtsFest last week. This campus-wide celebration showcased the full breadth of our students’ artistic talents, and we are so proud of every performer and artist who shared their work.

Throughout the day, students in Upper School and Middle School presented a wide range of creative expressions—from theatrical performances and student films to live musical sets and visual art exhibitions. Our younger students were able to engage with these performances and artworks as audience members, sparking joyful conversations about creativity and connection.

One highlight was the Visual Arts Exhibition, which featured powerful work from MYP and DP Visual Arts students. A special thank you to our visiting adjudicator, Dr. Valerie Gillespie, a professional artist and curator, who offered invaluable feedback and encouragement to our student artists.

We are especially proud of our Diploma Program Visual Arts students, Adysn and Keira, who courageously presented their culminating portfolios to the school. Their ability to articulate complex themes—ranging from identity and mental health to human emotion and the natural world—exemplifies the power of art to foster empathy, reflection, and dialogue.

From theater and music to film and visual arts, this week reflected the vibrancy and diversity of Alcuin’s arts programming. Thank you for showing up, cheering on our students, and helping us make this a truly memorable event.

    With gratitude,
    Alcuin Fine Arts Faculty

    PSAT 8/9 & PSAT 10 – TESTING REFLECTION

Last Friday morning, our 8th, 9th, and 10th graders took the PSAT on campus. This test serves as an important opportunity for students to practice standardized testing in preparation for future “higher stakes” assessments.

Despite a few hiccups along the way, our students showed adaptability and resilience throughout the experience—handling each moment with grace and focus.

Thank you to our faculty and staff for their support, and congratulations to our students for their positivity and perseverance!
